Trio Generations

Konzertreihe „Improvisation International“

Maggie Nicols (GB) – voice, tap-dance
Lisa Ullén (SE) – piano
Matilda Rolfsson (SE/NO) – bass drum, percussion

Trio Generations are three free-improvising musicians from three different generations, all of them being important key figures in their respective cultural environments: The famous UK singer Maggie Nicols (1948), pianist Lisa Ullén (1964) from the core of Sweden’s improvisation scene and Swedish percussionist Matilda Rolfsson (* 1987) on whose initiative the band met 2016 in London for the first time.

Trio Generations’ music can be described as developments of spontaneous impressionistic and abstract improvisations with elements from free-jazz and “vaudeville”. Sometimes theatrical and with a sense of despair from the darkest place, but always with evolving playfulness and with a sublime sharpness that creates tension and clarity in the music. Their debut-album Unfolding was recorded 2017 and released in November 2018.

Maggie Nicols is one of the most distinguished improvisers today. She is based in Wales and London and has worked with “everyone” in the avant-garde music-scene since the late 1960s, well known for her works with players such as John Stevens (Spontaneous Music Ensemble), Phil Minton, Keith and Julie Tippett, or with Swiss pianist Irène Schweizer and French bass player Joëlle Léandre in their long-standing trio Les Diaboliques.

Lisa Ullén is one of Sweden’s most beloved improvisers. She constantly travels the world and has recently released her very recommendable triple solo album Piano Works (2017). She can be heard with some of Europe’s finest improvisers like Charlotte Hug, Okkyung Lee, Mariam Wallentin or Nina De Heney.

Matilda Rolfsson is currently based in Trondheim, Norway, and can be acknowledged as a new strong voice within the European improvisation scene. With her 20” bass drum, she has impressed many critics as The Wire magazine (UK) or Orkester Journalen (SE). She can be seen and heard together with many musicians and dancers from all over Europe.

Das Trio Generations sind drei frei improvisierende Musikerinnen aus drei verschiedenen Generationen, die alle wichtige Schlüsselfiguren in ihrem jeweiligen kulturellen Umfeld sind.
