Julien Desprez & Rob Mazurek

Julien Desprez is radical. His music can exude a terrifying force, create a dark silence or make everything shine in a glistening light. He is not one of those musicians who plays beautiful pieces or who will keep pushing the volume level to the limit. He doesn’t hide behind the powerful sound of his instrument: the electric guitar. For him, the guitar has become a controller which he uses to fluctuate between contrasting levels of light and sound, while he explores the physical and mental space, making it soar and tremble at the same time. Rigid performance tableaus break open, come apart, and collapse.

The French guitarist Julien Desprez will be performing two back-to-back highlights – first a German premiere with Rob Mazurek on the cornet, and then the Franco-German trio Abacaxi will be appearing with electric bass guitarist François Riffaud and the Berlin-based drummer Max Andrzejewski – a world premiere. Mazurek and Desprez are extreme artists who choreograph sound, noise and context to form a new, flexible, intense, often harsh dynamic, which develops an urgency that can transcend sound. And when they collaborate, sparks begin to fly! The Abacaxi formation presents an intensely abrupt electric sound sculpture with a sharp edge and shrill brilliance. Bright noise embedded in a choreography of pulsing light: a wild and innovative perspective on seemingly immutable, engrained rock riffs – somewhere between the late 60's rock and sound art.
